Some target audiences are quite broad.  Olympic Games, for instance, will target a mass market.  Some products are targeted at a much narrower, specialised  target audience and is often referred to as a niche market.

Audience can be divided into different categories: Age, gender, social class, culture, life style, sexual orientation, location.

Media organisations use primary research techniques such as focus groups, questionnaires and face-to-face interviews.  Secondary research can be obtained by using ratings and circulation figures from specialised media research organisations.

Audiences interact with and respond to different elements or codes,  There are verbal codes (language); visual codes (what is seen) ; and aural codes (music).

Horror films elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's most fears. Horror films deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden worst fears and terror of the unknown.
Storyboard of "Scream"
We've watched the film scream which is a horror. The sound is really effective, we see close up of pop corn poping which creates tension to the audience. We also see a long shot of a guy tied up on a chair, bleeding which makes it scary.

Storyboard of the film Inception
The film "Inception" is a thriller. The introduction of the film doesn't give a clear information about the film. It makes the audience confused and they don't know what is going on. We see this by the close-ups to a man's face and also what shows that the movie is a thriller could be the dramatic sounds of the waves and the soft focus of children giggling. Also the colour of the scenes is not the expected sunny weather which should be on a beach, it is grey and brings coldness.

Analysis of the intro of a comedy: "Don't be a Menace"

Exaggerates racial stereotype: black in an urban neighboorhood who shot each other and don't live past the age of 21. The mother's hysterical reaction does not seem realistic especially when she discovers son is not hers.
When we see the woman coming there is a long shot and after a mid-shot while she is crying and this is funny because she is acting like she is crazy, screaming and being hysterical. She is in the scene for 25 seconds.
In the beginning we can see how a guy shoots another one and that is shown with a long shot with both of the guys in the scene cutting to the man who shoots in a mid-shot.
